Artist Statement:
The inspiration for Winter Decadence was all around my home. I live on a lake
and when Fall fills the air, leaves are turning color and falling to the ground.
Then our Indian Summer comes and the reflection of the bare trees glisten in the
sun, in the mirror reflection on the lake the trees look like gold.
Batiks from the beautiful collections at Sew Batik were used in this wall
hanging. The leaves were cut from a rich purple and a vibrant turquoise tone on
tone Batik. The third leaf was cut from a Batik with a pattern reflecting all the
colors in the wall hanging.
The tree is a drawing I designed to fit within the wreath of leaves and
branches were added to stretch the tree beyond the wreath. The center of the wreath
was quilted with a straight cross hatching first on the background fabric. The tree
was done in gold using a foiling technique, much like painting or coloring on
fabric.
The leaves were added to form the wreath and the vein work and background
quilting was done. I used Dream Wool batting, stitching closely around each leaf,
tree trunk and branches, the wool batting provided enough loft to give a 3D effect
to the piece. The small inner border was quilted with a pattern designed by Urban
Elementz. This pattern is called "Maple Leaf" and is available in digitized and
paper panto formats.
My love for designing art quilts using different coloring media sprang up
after I was so inspired by Irena Bluhm and learning her coloring technique. Just
look around you, there is inspiration everywhere.
