They say that once you learn how to draw an apple, you are ready to try a portrait!
That's what happened here. I had a reference photograph of my younger daughter Katharina and once I realized that I can't get the likeness in my first attempt, I gave up and tried to make up another pretty face. So this face belongs to no one.
It is made up! I like this drawing, because it is my very first attempt at drawing a portrait. However, I did not invest enough time to master a portrait, because I lost interest and started doing something else! To master a portrait would be the most challenging task for me and I might get back to try it again one of these days, or when I retire. Whenever that might be. I always will keep my fingers into something, as I can't sit still, unless I get too old to move!
This person in the picture is supposed to be my daughter Katharina. I did get few little similiarities, but not a complete likeness! I tell you, I was having a hard time getting the likness, but I was making little progress every time I tried, then I stopped. Lost interest. That's the end of trying to master this technique. You will never master a technique if you stop trying!
This is supposed to be my daughter Katharina again. This picture is the closest I was able to get when it comes to capture the likeness.
This is supposed to be my older daughter Sylvia. The likeness is so far off, it isn't even funny! I kept trying to capture the likenss in few other attempts.
This is supposed to be somebody who posed for us during a class, but his face turned out too feminine and the likeness is off as well! For what it was worth, it was still a great experience and practice. I used pastels on art paper in this portrait.

Posted by Joy Bernhardt on September 9th, 2011 at 6:33 p.m.I am in AWE of you!!! Those girls at the top are so good. Wish I could draw like that. I did see a lesson on how to draw eyes the other day, and I drew one eye that look real good. Next is the nose. Don't think I can do that.
